The
American Society for Testing Material Standards (ASTM) establishes standards
for testing materials. The ASTM standard F1249 for the testing of
Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) or moisture permeation rate through
a plastic film
In this standard,
the test material is held in such a manner that it separates two side of
a test chamber. One side is exposed to a wet nitrogen gas and
the other to a moisture free gas carrier. Molecules of water diffusing
through a film is carried to an infrared sensor by the carrier gas.
The water vapor transmission rate of the test film is then displayed in
either g/m2/day or g/100in/day.
Illinois Instruments
Inc. manufactures a line of WVTR analyzers that follows the exactly same
procedure as F1249 the exception that an electrolytic sensor (p2o5) sensor
replaces the infrared sensor. The p2o5 sensor is a primary measurement
and capability for measure lower levels of moisture than infrared.
The modern standards of ISO and Germany specify the more accurate sensor
utilized by Illinois Instruments Inc. The international standards
are ISO 15106-3 and DIN 53122-2

Background
With decades
of experience in process gas analysis, Illinois Instruments, Inc. has become
recognized worldwide as a leader in oxygen analysis. With facilities in
the US, Europe, and Asia, we offer a wide range of products and services
to satisfy nearly every process gas measurement need.
Our line of
permeation analyzers has been the fastest growing segment of our business.
Selling to companies in the plastics, food, and pharmaceutical industries,
we continue to expand into this industry while developing new products
and methods.
Our recent move
to Johnsburg, Illinois nearly tripled the space for manufacturing and added
a controlled environment laboratory to house our testing services group.
Industries
Served
Each of our
products has proven uniquely suited to a broad range of applications in
a diverse field of industries. Among these are: high-purity gas production,
electronics assembly, semiconductor manufacturing, heat treating, and food
and pharmaceutical packaging.
Technologies
Illinois Instruments,
Inc. maintains research and engineering facilities driven toward sensor
research and ongoing technological innovation. As one of the only oxygen
analyzer companies using all 4 different proven oxygen sensor technologies,
we are uniquely positioned to handle virtually all oxygen measurement applications.
This combination
of sensors allows us to measure from 0.01 ppb up to 100% oxygen in most
industrial gas streams. As an example, our innovative RACE Oxygen Sensor
represents a quantum leap in fuel cell sensor technology. Capable of purging
from 20.9% down to 20 ppm within 2 minutes, it's response time is unmatched
in the industry. This sensor has found wide acceptance in the electronics
assembly industry.
