The American
Society for Testing and Materials Standards (ASTM) establishes standards
for the testing of materials. The ASTM Standard D3985 is
for testing the Oxygen Permeation Rate (OTR) through a plastic material
in the form of sheet, coated material, laminate or package.
The International Organization for Standardization test procedure standard
is ISO 15105. The German standard is D53380-3.
The test material
is held in such a manner that it separates two side of a test chamber.
One side is exposed to a nitrogen atmosphere and the other side is exposed
to an oxygen atmosphere. Testing is complete when the
concentration of oxygen in the nitrogen side is constant.
